Copper and Brass Patina/Calcium Removal & Restoration

Copper and Brass Patina/Calcium Removal & Restoration

Matt Matt

These instructions apply ONLY for Copper or Brass products, excluding “Copper Style”.

Natural red metals like copper and brass will patina over time. The rate at which the patina develops and what colors it may produce depends on the environment it is exposed to.

Our copper/brass products can be restored to their original brushed finish with the use of a scotchbrite pad. This process is not necessary and natural patina does not affect the structural integrity of the product.

Tips

  • This process is for brushed copper and brass finished products ONLY.
  • Copper Style products are powder coated and must be cleaned NOT refinished.
  • Procedures for cleaning powder coated are available.
  • Unless instructed to do so, it is not recommended to refinish products sold with a Patina finish; as this cleaning procedure may remove the patina finish and sealing coatings.

Supplies for Copper/Brass Product Patina Removal

  • Maroon Scotchbrite Handpads
  • Disposable Gloves

Instructions

Read these instructions in their entirety before performing this procedure.

  1. Clean the product thoroughly with warm water, dish soap and a soft towel or sponge.
  2. Allow the product to dry for 12 hours.
  3. Test the Scotchbrite cleaning process in a small inconspicuous area before proceeding to the entire product.
  4. Wearing gloves and applying light pressure to the scotchbrite pad, brush the product in back and forth motion following the original brushed grain.
  5. Continue the process in the grain direction, moving to unused or new pads as necessary.  It may take several minutes to remove unwanted deposits and corrosion.

Notes

  • Avoid any sharp edges on the product, as they may cause injury
  • Scotchbrite pads have a limited lifespan, the quantity needed will depend on the size of your cleaning and the amount of patina/build up to remove.
  • You can cut scotchbrite pads into desired shape/size with kitchen shears/scissors.
  • Corners and hard to reach areas can be cleaned with scotchbrite pads that are taped or stapled to handles like wooden dowels.
  • Additional scotchbrite pads can be purchased from Majestic Water Spouts or at most hardware stores.

If you’re trying to remove oil marks (such as fingerprints) or stains from our brushed copper/brass  product, we recommend removing them with a solvent like Acetone on a microfiber cloth.  Wear solvent gloves and use an abundance of caution to avoid vapors of solvents.

If undesired patina or deposits continue to develop at a rate that is less than ideal, please contact us for more information on applied coating solutions.
